Why Google suspends Business Profiles
Google suspends Business Profiles that violate the Business Profile guidelines. The most common causes: keyword stuffing in the business name field (putting 'Acme Dental — Best Dentist in Austin' in the name field), address mismatches (the registered address doesn't match what's visible on the profile), prohibited or misleading categories, suspicious review patterns (sudden velocity spikes, reviews from accounts with no prior history), video verification mismatches (the verified location doesn't match the address), and shared login credentials that result in inconsistent edits across multiple users.
The prevention checklist
Quarterly audit items: verify that the business name in GBP exactly matches the legal/signage business name — no service keywords, no location names, no descriptors. Verify that the address matches Google Maps exactly. Review your primary and secondary categories against the current Google Business Profile guidelines. Check for duplicate profiles using your business name and address — suppress any duplicates found. Audit your review pattern for sudden velocity spikes that might trigger Google's quality filters. Ensure all users with GBP access have dedicated Google accounts — no shared credentials. Check that your profile URL still resolves if you've recently changed domain.
The reinstatement process
If a profile is suspended, the reinstatement path is: identify the cause (read the suspension notification carefully — Google usually indicates the guideline violated). Fix the underlying issue before applying for reinstatement. Submit a reinstatement request through the Business Profile Help Center. Include documentation: photos of the business exterior, interior, and signage; a copy of the business license or registration; a utility bill showing the business name and address. Expect a review window of 3–14 days. If the initial reinstatement is denied, the appeal process is the Google Business Profile Community forum — a human review is not guaranteed. Prevention is materially easier than reinstatement.
