Why category is the strongest ranking lever you control
Primary category signals to Google what the business fundamentally is. It shapes which queries the profile appears for, which attributes Google offers, and which features (menus, service lists, appointment URLs) are available. Picking the wrong primary category — or defaulting to a too-broad category like 'Business' — is the single most common fixable reason a multi-location portfolio underperforms in the local pack.
How to choose the right primary category
The primary category should match the single most important thing the business does — the query you most want to rank for. If you're a dental practice, the right primary category is almost always 'Dentist' — not 'Health & Medical', not 'Doctor', not 'Dental Clinic' (which exists but is less commonly used). Research which category your top local competitors use for their highest-performing locations. Use a tool that surfaces the current Google category list — it's updated periodically and the right specific category often outperforms a broader parent.
Secondary categories: how many and which ones
Google allows up to 10 secondary categories. In practice, 3–6 well-chosen secondary categories outperform 10 loosely chosen ones. Secondary categories extend relevance for adjacent queries — a dental practice might add 'Cosmetic Dentist', 'Orthodontist' (if they offer orthodontics), and 'Pediatric Dentist' as secondary categories. Don't add categories for services you don't offer — this signals to Google that the profile may be low-quality.
How to audit your category selection
Category audit methodology for multi-location brands: export all location primary and secondary categories. Run a geo-grid scan for each location's primary service queries. Identify locations where rank is significantly weaker than comparable locations — category mismatch is often the cause. Compare category choices against top-ranked competitors in each market. Check the current Google category list against your selections annually — Google adds and renames categories, and the best specific category may have been added after your original setup.
