AI Overviews are answering local queries
Google AI Overviews — the LLM-generated summary that appears at the top of some search results — now appear for a growing category of local queries. 'Best Italian restaurant in Austin', 'dentist accepting new patients near downtown Seattle', 'emergency plumber Chicago' are all query types where AI Overviews have been observed surfacing business citations. The businesses cited in these answers are not always the same as the ones in the traditional local pack below.
How citation selection works
Google hasn't published the exact algorithm for AI Overview local citations. Based on observed patterns, the businesses that appear consistently share these characteristics: complete Google Business Profiles with accurate categories, attributes, and services; high review count (100+) and strong review velocity; strong, unique on-page content about services and location; LocalBusiness schema with complete fields; and brand mentions in authoritative third-party sources. The AI Overview local result draws from the same signals as the traditional local pack, but appears to weight content quality and entity clarity more heavily.
What operators can do to improve AI Overview citation rates
The optimization list for AI Overview citations is almost identical to traditional local SEO — but with added emphasis on three areas. First, content specificity: your website's location pages need detailed, service-specific content. Thin pages with only the business name, address, and phone number rarely get cited. Second, structured data completeness: LocalBusiness schema with every available field populated. Third, review volume: 100+ reviews with a 4.5+ average appears to be an informal threshold below which AI Overview citations become sparse.
How to monitor your AI Overview citation rate
There's no official Google Search Console metric for AI Overview appearances. Current monitoring approaches: manual spot-checks — search your top 10 queries in incognito mode and record whether an AI Overview appears and whether you're cited; tools that automate this (including GBPHive's AI-search visibility tracking on Growth and above plans); and correlation analysis — if your impressions hold while CTR drops, AI Overviews may be absorbing clicks.
